How it works

Record a run. Earn a medal.

London Runderground turns the runs you already record into a citywide challenge across 316 miles of network. It is in development: here is how it will work.

  1. Step 1

    Choose a line

Browse all 11 lines and pick your challenge. Each line has a start and finish station, a distance and a difficulty rating so you know exactly what you are taking on.

  2. Step 2

    Run it end to end

Run the line above ground from its first station to its last, in a single activity recorded on your GPS watch or phone. Follow roads and paths that trace the route — you set the exact line.

  3. Step 3

    GPS-based progress tracking (in development)

We are building automatic progress tracking that will compare a recorded run with the line’s route and its stations. Device connections are not available yet; we will confirm which devices are supported before launch.

  4. Step 4

    Earn your medal

Each completed line will unlock its finisher medal. Finish all 11 to claim the gold LONRUN medal.

The rules, kept simple

One continuous activity

Each line must be completed in a single recorded run. No stitching multiple activities together.

Distance tolerance

Your run must cover at least the line’s stated distance, within a sensible tolerance for real-world roads.

On foot only

Running or walking is fine. Cycling, transport and other activity types will not be matched.

Questions

Do I have to run on the exact tube tracks?+

No — and you should not try to. You run above ground on public roads and paths, tracing the line between its start and finish stations. Progress tracking is being designed around passing close to each station, not following the literal rails.

Is this affiliated with Transport for London?+

No. London Runderground is an independent running challenge inspired by the shape of the network. It is not operated by, endorsed by or affiliated with TfL.

How long do I have to complete a line?+

There is no time limit on the challenge as a whole. Each individual line simply needs to be a single continuous activity.

Can I do the lines in any order?+

Yes. Start with the 2-mile Waterloo & City, or go straight for the 60-mile Central Line. All 11 count towards your gold medal.

Is London Runderground live yet?+

Not yet. The routes and the challenge are designed, and we are developing automatic GPS-based progress tracking and device connections. Contact us if you would like to hear when it opens.
